A New Bright Lantern

People ask me, “Who starts a new business in the middle of a war?”

I guess I do.

In the past several years, my country of Myanmar has been a dark and challenging place to live and work. Politically and economically, the country has been in chaos. Yet, even in the midst of war and despair, we have hope for a brighter future.

Bright Lantern is a new coffee company with a clear vision. We have committed ourselves to three goals:

  • Pay coffee farmers a fair wage for their crops
  • Invest in improving education for children in remote areas
  • Support pastors and churches in small communities

Despite the obstacles before us, we believe that a healthy and profitable business can help bring about change. We fully realize that these three areas above are currently in jeopardy in Myanmar: coffee farmers are often under paid, children are neglected, and churches suffer from persecution and isolation. Yet we see light shining in the darkness.

This year, Bright Lantern has been buying coffee on a new mountain, and we are already hearing encouraging stories from farmers who are so thankful to be paid a fair price for their harvest. In the past, other companies have offered them very little money in return for their hard work. However, we are excited about offering them significantly more—in many places, up to twice what they have been paid in previous years. We simply want to pay farmers what they deserve for their hard work and excellent coffee. We believe that is the only way to build trust and healthy long-term relationships. We want our work to give dignity to all.

In 2023, we are committed to purchasing and processing a great harvest, and we are excited about the prospect of using our position in these communities to help provide education for neglected children and to advocate for persecuted churches.

At Bright Lantern, we believe we can make a difference in Myanmar by partnering with Lighthouse Coffee. Together, we can help rebuild this nation and restoring hope for my people.
